Sonus faber

The name is Latin for "handcrafted sound," and it has been a working description rather than a slogan since Franco Serblin founded the company in 1983. Sonus faber builds loudspeakers the way the workshops of nearby Cremona once built violins — which is why the flagship models carry the names of luthiers: Guarneri, Amati, Stradivari, Il Cremonese. The company still designs and builds in Arcugnano, in the hills outside Vicenza.

The lute-shaped cabinet that arrived in 1993 remains the most recognizable silhouette in high-end audio, and its curves are structural, not cosmetic — the same geometry that recalls a violin's body also stiffens the enclosure against resonance. The materials follow the same logic: silk-dome tweeters, cellulose-pulp cones, cork damping chambers, driver baskets patterned after the camellia flower, and cabinets finished in solid walnut, marble, brass, and hand-worked Italian leather. Before any speaker ships, it is voiced by ear, a final human pass that no measurement rig replaces.

Few brands cover this much ground without losing their voice. Lumina and Sonetto open the range, Olympica carries it into serious two-channel and theater rooms, Heritage keeps the traditional solid-wood designs alive, and the Homage collection bears the instrument names. Above them all sits Suprema: a four-column, 40th-anniversary statement system governed by an external analog crossover. Gravis subwoofers and the Omnia and Duetto wireless systems complete the family.
