The Wavelight DAC brings Rockna's FPGA-based R2R conversion to a more compact chassis, built on a Xilinx Spartan-7 running the company's custom architecture — firmware updates change the hardware itself. A 25-bit discrete R2R ladder performs the conversion, fed through the Femtovox2 reclocking scheme with a memory-based digital PLL at around 300 femtoseconds of jitter, and the user can choose between linear, minimum phase, hybrid, and NOS filter modes. With five digital inputs and one analog input with home-theater bypass, it also works as a preamplifier: volume control is fully analog, digitally controlled, so no data is truncated. The analog path is fully discrete, with two toroidal transformers separating analog and digital supplies and over 100,000uF of filter capacitance.
